The Department of Chemistry was established in 2002 as a supporting department to cater to the academic requirements of I & II semester B.E students of Visvesvaraya Technological University. In the year 2004, the Department was brought under the scope of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and upgraded to the requirements of the new curriculum. The Department has seven faculty members and one supporting staff to cater to the needs of mainstream engineering departments.
The broad-based curriculum of chemistry and its technology for the engineering degree course includes the study of certain basic concepts and also socially relevant aspects such as Environmental Science and Alternate Energy Sources. The Department also offers elective subjects to higher semester engineering students, keeping in view the latest developments in the field of Applied Science. The Department has a spacious and well-equipped laboratory with sufficient instruments and apparatus to meet the requirements of the syllabus, as well as an attached classroom and a collection of reference books. Experienced and competent faculty members help students in conducting various experiments.
Faculty members are frequently encouraged to update their knowledge by attending Conferences/Seminars/Workshops and other Faculty Development Programs that are in tune with developments in the field of Science & Technology. The Department strives to provide a conducive environment that motivates staff members to engage in research in their respective areas of expertise. Four faculty members of the Department, holding doctoral degrees from premier institutes with publications in peer-reviewed journals to their credit, head Department research activities. Some thrust areas of research include Bio-degradable Polymers and Polymer Nano Composites.
